You could hear throughout the halls, as the Martha Cook Wizards engaged in wizard duels throughout the week. "I win! Can I have your wand?" One Cookie Wizard asked another. One wizard out, 29 more to go. A dreary Monday morning set the scene for what would be an incredible, magic filled, Harry Potter week at the Martha Cook residence hall. As girls filed in on Sunday night for dinner, one by one they were sorted into their perspective houses: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw. Dumbledore (Chef Gary) yelled at Emily for magically putting her name in the Goblet of Fire, and Professor Quirrel (Christina) yelled in alarm -- "There's a troll in the dungeon! There's a troll in the dungeon! TROLLLLLLL..." and down she went. Later Sunday evening, the Cookie Wizards proceeded downstairs, to begin their wand making process.
Each night of the week, the Martha Cook Wizards spent their night in the common room, eating Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans and drinking pumpkin juice. They made shirts for quidditch, and even watched some movies evoking memories about the history of Hogwarts!
Throughout the week, the intense Wizard's duel continued... sneak attacks, tricks, lies and deception led to the narrowing down of our four remaining wizards: Jenna, Kirsten, Jenna, and Lexi. It was a hard competition, and the girls were on their toes the whole week. In the end, Kirsten was the winner, as she had the most wands -- seven! -- at the end of the week. When asked why the four decided to end the competition before a real winner could formally win all duels, cookie Wizard Jenna stated, "It was fun while it lasted, but it's a relief to not have to look over my shoulder all of the time. It was making me paranoid. While I feel weird not to be playing, I can trust my friends again."
The Hogwarts House Cup winner of the week was Gryffindor, based upon decorations and attendance. Slytherin won the quidditch match on Saturday. Special mentions go to Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw! We saw some really great creativity come out of these floors, and Ravenclaw also put a lot of effort into decorating!
A big part of the week was the penny war. All proceeds from the penny war are going towards the Martha Cook Dance Marathon fundraising. In total HP week raised $153.76 for DMUM!
All in all, Harry Potter week was a huge success and so much fun!
Was Harry Potter week our only concern for the week? Of course not! We are Cookies after all, with extremely busy schedules! Two fun events of the weekend were the Michigan Ballroom competition, and the Northwestern vs. Michigan Football team! The Wolverines beat Northwestern, a team originally ranked 5 seats higher, by a whopping 38 points. Michigan's third shutout in a row, and we can't wait to see what the Michigan State game brings tomorrow! GO BLUE!
